At a Glance
The Department of Social Services was established in 1961. The mandate of the Department of Social Services is to provide services to the vulnerable groups of society, the poorest of the poor, the marginalized and the disadvantaged groups. Our service goes further than just bringing services to these groups. It is our brief to deliver on our mandate in a manner that will engage and empower communities to participate actively in the improvement of their quality of life so as to build their self-reliance, which is a pre-requisite to sustainable development.
 

The City Social Services Program is an original program conducted by the Department of Social Services. This program is one of the key initiatives of the Directorate and it is extremely important for the development of the city's social service.
In order to find livelihood in the city's slums, organize and help the floating family members of poor and low-income floating families from different areas, motivate and cooperate in achieving sustainable activities for socio-economic development through mutual aid. The populations that came in search of livelihood were created in different places of the city, at the end of the drain, on the drain side, abandoned unhealthy wells or wrecked cottage built on the groundwater, and unwanted residences.
Due to the dirty environment, the failure to meet the basic needs of life, the city's life is in disarray today due to malnutrition and health problems, unemployment, begging etc.
So, in order to improve the quality of problems through the limited resources available in the fields of education, health, culture, nutrition, family planning etc. in collaboration with various government and non-government organizations by developing well-established relationships between these people living in the urban areas, adopt life-improving programs for the betterment of living and suffering in the public life. The purpose of this project is to Under the advice of experts from the United Nations for the purpose of implementing this law, the government formed the Dhaka Urban Community Development Board in 1955. As part of the Board's Action Plan, the Urban Community Development Project (UCDP) was introduced in 1955 in Quettuli, Dhaka.In the same way, the success of this project attracted the attention of the government and the project was included in the Five-Year Plan and under it the activities were expanded in Gopibagh, Lalbagh and Mohammadpur areas of Dhaka city. In 1960 more 12 projects were started in different cities and 16 number of projects were made. After the establishment of Social Welfare Directorate in 1961, the success and expansion of the project continued. In response to the demand of the poor people living in the urban areas, this program was upgraded to 43 units in phases till June 1996. With the increasing demand, in July'96, the number of units of this program was increased to 50 by establishing more 7 city social services activities in the development of 'City Social Welfare Program Development and Extension -1 Episode'.
This program was implemented in 34 district headquarters of the country. Considering the need of this program, another development project has been adopted in the development of the 'City Social Welfare Program - 2nd phase', in the year 2002-2005 for the development of the tribal population of the remaining 30 district headquarters area under which 30 more units will be set up in 30 new districts. This has resulted in all the districts of Bangladesh being covered under this program
With the increasing demand, in July'96, the number of units of this program was increased to 50 by establishing more 7 city social services activities in the development of 'City Social Welfare Program Development and Extension -1 Episode'.
